Aim
This qualification provides the knowledge for those seeking to work as CCTV operators in the private security industry in:
- CCTV monitoring
- CCTV Control Rooms
What this course is about
A Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence is required when manned guarding activities are carried out using CCTV equipment to;
- Watch members of the public or identify particular people.
- Guard against disorder or protect people from assault (this includes using CCTV to stop these things from happening or provide information about them if they do happen.
This includes the use of CCTV in these cases to record images that are viewed on non-CCTV equipment but not to identify a trespasser or protect property.
Who this course is for/ entry requirements
New entrants to the sector without a previous award/qualification.

- Learner must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Units
- Principles Of Working In The Private Security Industry
The learner will understand the main characteristics, legislation, procedures for arrest and emergencies like fires or terror threats as well as communication and record keeping relevant to the role of security operative. The learner will also understand safe working practices, how to keep vulnerable people safe and post incident management.
- Principles and Practices of working as a CCTV Operator within the Private Security Industry
The learner will understand the purpose of surveillance systems (CCTV), the legislation involved and how they affect public space surveillance and the roles and responsibilities of the control room team and other stakeholders. Learners will also demonstrate operational use of CCTV equipment, understand surveillance techniques, the importance of procedure in public space surveillance, health and safety in a CCTV environment and understanding/responding to different types of incidents.
Assessment and Qualification
Learners will be assessed using a multiple-choice question papers a portfolio of work and practical observation. There are 2 test papers both with a pass mark of 70%. The first has 72 questions and lasting 110 minutes, the second has 40 questions and lasts 60 minutes. The practical sections will consist of candidate demonstrations of skills and be assessed by a tutor.
Upon successful completion of the course candidates will receive a Level 2 award for CCTV Operators (Public Space Surveillance) within the Private Security Industry.
How long this course is
This course has a duration of 3 days learning with the tutor from 9am to 6pm. There are 8 self-study hours in which candidates will work alone at home to complete a unit using course handbooks
